Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS)

OGS activities are carried out by the scientific research divisions of Oceanography (OCE), Geophysics (GEO), Seismology (CRS) and by the technological research section of Infrastructure (IRI). Oceanography is one of the traditional research lines at OGS and has continued to develop in recent years, achieving relevant scientific results at both Italian and international levels. In the last forty years large scale studies were carried out for private and public companies to evaluate and forecast operational implications of the marine conditions. Almost all projects on the Adriatic Sea have seen the Division of Oceanography involved as a relevant partner for physical oceanography studies. OGS has been involved in several activities concerning the evaluation of man-induced activities (maritime transports, harbour and industrial activities, shellfish farming,..) on the marine environment and holds large datasets of physical, chemical and biological properties in coastal areas. OGS hosts the National Oceanographic Data Centre for Italy within the IODE system of the UNESCO IOC, active in storing, qualifying and disseminating historical data sets. OGS is Member of EuroGOOS and the Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network (MOON). OGS activities are sponsored by the Ministry of High Education and Research (MIUR) and national and international collaborations/projects. The OGS staff is formed by approximately 280 people (permanent, contracts and grants).

mosetti Renzo Mosetti

Degree in Physics in 1977 at the University of Trieste. Research Director at the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) – Trieste. From 1994 to 2004: director of the Department of Oceanography (OGS); from 2005 to 2012 Director of the Department of Biological Oceanography (OGS). Expertise in the field of hydrodynamic modelling applied to the tides and storm surge forecasting in the Adriatic Sea and geophysical fluid dynamics. Research activity in the field of ecosystem modelling and environmental-economic problems. Expertise in physical oceanography, ocean-climate interactions, marine coastal modeling, socio-economic analysis and modeling, data management and observational network in coastal areas. Co-ordination of many EU research project since the third Framework Programme. Director of courses in oceanography held at ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics) in Trieste from 1996 to 1998. From 2000 member of the Italian delegation to the IOC. Chair of the National Oceanographic Data Centre (IOC/IODE) for Italy. National representative of IODE/IOC. Organiser of the XIX IODE Committee meeting in Trieste, March 2007. Past National IPCC expert. In early 2013, appointed as a member of the Pool of Expert for the Regular process for the Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment by the United Nations.

Alessandra Giorgetti

Coordinator of NODC (National Oceanographic Data Center/IOC) OGS/OCE research unit. She graduated in Mathematics at University of Trieste (Italy) in 1994. Since 1995 working at OGS in the field of physical oceanography, mainly concerned with oceanographic data management, scientific data validation and processing; participating in several national and international projects (MODB, MATER, MEDAR, SeaSearch, EDIOS, ADRICOSM and ADRICOSM-EXT); scientific coordinator of OGS activities within SeaDataNet, ADRICOSM-STAR and the National meteo-marine data archive project ARCHIMEDE. At present she is coordinator of the EMODNet Chemical lot.

lipizer Marina Lipizer

Graduated in Natural Science at University of Trieste (Italy) in 1994, worked since 1995 in the fields of chemical, biological and physical oceanography first at the Italian National Council of Research (CNR) and, since 2002, at OGS. She has carried out research on biogeochemical cycles, on phytoplankton bloom dynamics and on effects of meteorological and biological forcings and of human activities on the marine environment in temperate coastal areas, in particular in the northern Adriatic Long Term Ecological Research site; she has also been involved in research on ocean circulation and biogeochemical cycles in polar areas in the framework of global change studies. She has a long experience in the fields of data acquisition, in laboratory analysis of several chemical parameters and in producing quality checked datasets.
