Friuli Venezia Giulia is a hub for science and technology, with a large community of foreign scientists and students and an impressive network of 50 public and private research centres.
In order to build synergies andenhance the international attractiveness of the region, the regional Government created the Coordinating body of Research organisations (CER) in January 2004, to which the Region gives financial support. It is a network of the main scientific and research institutions in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The CER aims to promote synergies between public research entities and industry and to favour international scientific collaboration. It builds capacities with regard to regional human capital by means of initiatives which encourage the incoming mobility of researchers and scientists from all over the world.
The Regional Government has adopted specific Programs and documents to support research and innovation strategies, financed by regional funds and European Structural Funds.
The most important sectors in FVG are biotech, domotics, biomedicine and the maritime sector too. Recently the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region financed, with a budget of 15 million euros, industrial research and development projects in biomedicine, domotics, nautical and shipbuilding sectors. These projects are built between enterprises, research centres and scientific and technological Parks.
FVG and its industries, universities and research centres have also participated in the creation of three national clusters in strategic regional sectors: life sciences, technologies for the living environment, and land and sea surface mobility vehicles and systems.
In this context, the four regional Scientific and Technological Parks and the coordinating bodies of the two technological districts have an important role as intermediaries for innovation, to enhance knowledge transfer between research and business entities, in particular SMEs. The regional innovation strategy takes this fact into consideration also for international cooperation.
According to the Europe 2020 strategy, the role of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region is also to define priority topics in the Cohesion programme, that can foster a connection with the Horizon 2020 programme.
